MANECCS BUSINESS MEETING
DOBSON’S RESTAURANT, SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA
NOVEMBER 19, 2009
1. President Andy Holman welcomed MANECCS members and guests. Guests included Dan Abele, David Archibald, and David Biette.
2. The minutes of the October 5, 2008 MANECCS business meeting at Arlington, Virginia, were distributed and accepted as submitted. The minutes of the July 24, 2009 Executive Board meeting at Providence were also distributed.
3. Bob Bence presented the Treasurer’s Report. The balance at the beginning of this year was $21,247.46. Income this year has been $10,560.59 from the Canadian Consulate General’s grant and $100 from dues. The current balance is $22,868.32 after expenditures of $154.80 for website maintenance, $915.60 for attorney fees, $3549 for six Scholars Exchange grants, $15 for a Pennsylvania filing fee, $2669 for Executive Board planning reimbursements, $1150 for next June’s hockey conference at Buffalo, $416.41 for a Providence Hilton deposit towards our 2010 conference, $163.78 for the Executive’s July lunch at the Hilton, and $105.94 for MANECCS awards.
The membership unanimously accepted the Treasurer’s Report.
4. Andy Holman presented the President’s Report. He expressed our appreciation for the grant from the Canadian Consulate General. He gave an overview of the upcoming year’s activities. He invited MANECCS members to participate in the June 3-5 Hockey Conference at Buffalo.
5. George Sulzner offered a tribute to MANECCS life member Jeffrey Tenenbaum, who died last year. In addition to Jeffrey’s outstanding personal qualities, George highlighted his numerous contributions to Canadian Studies and to MANECCS over his many years as a librarian at the University of Massachusetts, Amherst.
6. Andy discussed the Publication Subvention Fund of up to $2000 to publishers which Richard Kay has proposed.
7. Andy invited the attendees to the 2010 MANECCS biennial conference at the Providence Hilton on September 30-October 3, 2010. Presentations in any Canadian Studies field are welcome, with special interest in papers and panels which explore Canadian connections to Providence, to Rhode Island, or to New England in general. Andy noted that $500 grants are available to facilitate the participation of graduate students and new faculty members at this conference. Abstracts should be submitted to both of the conference co-chairs, Marsha Tate (mat1@psu.edu) and Bob Timko (rtimko@mansfield.edu) by April 2, 2010.
8. Tony Cicerone informed the group that Bridgewater State University is hosting Killam visiting Professor Nino Ricci. Ricci is available to visit our campuses.
9. Bob Bence solicited MANECCS dues of $50 for the next two years.
